In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM), Erin Lynn Welsh, Taylor Patterson, and Brittany Asch present Let it Bloom, a project dedicated to celebrating the diverse group of women in their lives who have battled breast cancer. The result of a long-time collaboration between the artists, Let It Bloom features an arrangement of florals designed by Patterson and Asch, depicted through paintings by Welsh.
As a tribute to those who have fought breast cancer, the three artists draw their inspiration for Let it Bloom from stories of their loved one’s who battled the disease. Through the depiction of each loved one by an individual flower, the project highlights the women in a personal manner, rather than condensing them into a simple title or color. The completed images paint a unified vision of unique narratives defined by strength, life-lessons, and growth.
The root of the project lies in the story of Welsh’s mother, Karen, who passed away to breast cancer. An avid gardener, Karen shared her love of nature with her daughter through a garden full of orange day lilies and tales of nature, including a story about the changing seasons, “The Fall of Freddie the Leaf”. The story describes how flowers bloom and wilt, before blooming again, with the turn of each season. In the same way, Karen’s legacy continues on to this day through her garden full of orange day lilies, which have continued to bloom even 25 years after first planted. Let It Bloom celebrates these unique stories while reflecting on the beauty of a shared experience.
